Schalk, the a founding partner of Mechanika Specialised Engineering Services, has more than
16 years’ experience as mechanical engineer and project manager on projects of varying size
and complexity across a number of industries. Industries include Defense, Mining,
Construction, Nuclear Power, Coal Fired Power Generation, Manufacturing and Petro-Chemical.
Schalk’s qualifications include an MBA from the University of the Witwatersrand, an
Engineering Honours Degree in Technology Management from the University of Pretoria and a
Mechanical Engineering Degree from the University of Pretoria.
Schalk has been involved with a number of initiatives such as the Eskom’s Back2Basics
Programme involving a Design Base Reconstitution Project that is planned to be rolled out
across Eskom’s 8 large coal fired power stations. Construction Director for a project and
construction management of a number of structural steel fabrication and erection projects
across SA, Namibia and Zambia. Senior Project Manager in the project management of the
design & fabrication of subsurface petroleum storage tanks for Transnet as part of the NMPP
Project (New Multi Product Pipeline). Project management of the design and fabrication of
storage tanks for the new Walvisbay power station in Namibia. Senior Mechanical Engineer for
the specification of, preparation of technical tender documentation for, evaluation of
tenders for mechanical equipment for the Sasol Wax Expansion Project. Senior Project
Engineer to manage the design project for the ceramic core structures of the reactor for the
Pebble Bed Modular Reactor programme. Project Manager to manage the design, procurement,
fabrication, construction and commissioning of high pressure and high temperature
experimental plants for the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor programme. General Manager to manage
and coordinate the technical effort of the simulation and analysis group within PBMR (PSAG).

commission electro-mechanical systems for the mining, military and aviation industries.
